Unit 5. Cultural tourism. Have you ever been to Santiago de Compostela?

Now that we have just finished our holidays, it's a good moment to talk about the places and monuments we have visited. If you have been to Santiago at Easter or in another occasion, I suppose you can identify this monument, can't you?

Imagine you are a tourist guide, could you tell anything about it? The style, the period, the history... Did you know that it's mentioned in "The Pillars of the Earth", the novel by Ken Follet.

If you have been to this cathedral, you will know that it has several facades and a beautiful inside. Can you tell anything about the interior of this monument?
Could you identify this photograph?
Tell us something about it, and at the same time you will be able to remember the wonderful time you spent watching it.

  1. I never have been in Santiago de Compostela´s Cathedral, but I´d like to go there sometime. In the photograph we see the "Glory Portico" which is the most important masterpiece of the Romanic Epoch and it was made by "Maestro Mateo". The first photo is "Obradoiro" façade. This name comes from the place where were the Cathedral´s workshops. This Cathedral is the end of the "Camino de Santiago", a large number of ways that travel through the north of Spain and finish in this Cathedral.
I´d like to visit Santiago this summer or the following, if I can.

  2. I've never been in Santiago but this is The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. This cathedral is Romanesque built by "Maestro Esteban" and "Maestro Mateo". the Cathedral is a latin cross with three naves. The photo is te "Portico de la Gloria", the door more significant of the church.

  3. Unfortunately I have never been to Santiago, or better to say, I have not seen this beautiful cathedral. With my boyfriend we took a flight to Santiago last Christmas and we went directly to Coruña to meet his family. We stayed in Galicia for three weeks and I must say, that it is a very beautiful place. Amazing. We did various excursions = seeing the coast line, churches, castles...getting even to the south to A Guarda where we visited the rests of ancient roman villages which occupation dates back to the first century before Christ...and much more...magic places, beautiful landscapes and place full of history and mysticism

  5. Hello!

I was in Santiago long time ago, about 20 years, when I was 13 years old, and we did the end of year trip. I can't remember very well of the inside of Cathedral, because it's a long time, but I can tell that it is a pretty site. I didn't know that it was mencioned in "the Pillars of the Earth". I know, because I have studied it, that it is a Romanesque Cathedral, but with Baroque influence toward the XVIII Century. In any case, it is a sumptuous building.

    Best Regards
    Nati
